Eliezer Ben?Yehuda was a Jewish Litvak lexicographer of Hebrew and newspaper editor. He was the driving spirit behind the revival of the Hebrew language in the modern era. Cecil Roth summed up Ben-Yehuda's contribution to the Hebrew language: "Before Ben?Yehuda, Jews could speak Hebrew; after him, they did."
